Chapter Twelve

Will dressed carefully on Sunday morning. Since he'd never gone to any church, except for the occasional service in the Navy where what he had no choice but his uniform, he wasn't sure what he should wear. He settled on a tan sport coat and dark blue slacks. Since he lived just a couple of blocks from the church, he walked over, enjoying the stroll and the morning breeze.

Miss Daisy was waiting for him at the door. She smiled when she saw him.

"You did come," she said.

"Yes, ma'am."

She accepted his arm and led him into the church.

He took it all in. The church building was Texas limestone, the warm, buttery color seeming to give off a welcoming glow. Inside the church was bright, with tall, stained glass windows filtering the morning sun and casting a rainbow through the sanctuary.

As they walked up the aisle, he spied Logan and Hannah and her son. In the row ahead of them, Wolf and Livvy sat with Uncle Karl. He hadn't thought Uncle Karl was a churchgoer.

Miss Daisy stopped and stared in the direction of the Brauns. He thought he heard her grunt and gave her a quizzical glance.

She smiled and shook her head and they went on to the second row. Miss Daisy sat down, sliding over to give him room on the aisle. She took a hymnal and opened it to the service of the day.

"We'll share today, if that's all right. Will you hold it for me?" She handed him the open hymnal.

Will took the book and leaned toward her. "What do I do?"

"It's all right there." She pointed to the hymn board hanging on the wall in front of them. "The hymns are listed. I usually take a minute to find them before the service starts."

She reached into her purse and took out a small pad of sticky notes. Will wondered if she normally did this or was just trying to make his first time less stressful.

They found all the hymns and marked them. Miss Daisy then took a deep breath and closed her eyes and bowed her head. She was praying. Should he pretend to do the same? He'd never prayed before, unless you counted the silent plea for a good grade or the skill to help a patient. Even then he had never really thought about who he was asking.

The pastor entered from the side of the altar, just as Will became aware of another person who had stopped in the aisle beside him. He glanced over.

"Winnie!" He jumped up.

"Good morning, dear. I wondered if you'd make it today," Miss Daisy said as she scooted down the pew to make room. "Slide down, Will, and let her sit."

Beside him? Too good an opportunity to waste. He sat back down and slid.

Winnie hesitated, but took the offered seat. He was acutely aware of the fact that she would clearly have preferred to sit on the other side of Miss Daisy.

The organist began to play and he tried to concentrate on the service instead of the scent of the woman sitting beside him.
